The History of Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care is a type of complementary medicine that treats musculoskeletal disorders. Those who provide chiropractic care apply pressure to the spine and other areas of the body to adjust and correct alignment.
Although spinal manipulation has been part of medical care for thousands of years, the title chiropractor is a historically recent development. The official profession was started in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer.
Palmer was working in his office when a janitor came in. While he was bending over the trash, Palmer noticed that the janitor’s vertebrae seemed out of place and asked the janitor what happened. The janitor explained that while in an odd position, he felt a pop in his back. He then lost his hearing.
Palmer manipulated the man’s spine who then reported that he was able to hear again.
In 1897 Palmer opened the Palmer School of Chiropractic. He pushed for recognition of the profession by fighting for licensing and in 1913, Kansas was the first state to grant that wish, recognizing and requiring a license in order to practice.
Since that time, a set of standards for obtaining a license and for state board examinations has been set. Each year, millions of patients seek out the care of chiropractors.
