What are SSDI retroactive benefits and how far back can they go?

Quick Answer
SSDI retroactive benefits cover the period between your established onset date (EOD) and your application date — up to a maximum of 12 months before filing. The 5-month waiting period applies, reducing the effective maximum retroactive window to 7 months. Benefits during the pending period (application to approval) are separate and are sometimes called ‘accrued benefits.’ Combined, the total back pay can span several years.

What you need to know

Many claimants confuse ‘retroactive benefits’ with ‘back pay.’ They are related but technically different. Understanding both ensures you claim every dollar SSA owes you.

Retroactive benefits are payments for the period before you filed your application. SSDI allows up to 12 months of retroactive benefits if your onset date predates your application by more than 12 months. However, the 5-month waiting period reduces the effective window: SSA will not pay for the first 5 months after your onset, so the practical maximum retroactive payment covers 7 months before your filing date.

Accrued (pending) benefits are payments for the period from your application date through the month before your approval. If your case took 20 months to approve, you are owed roughly 20 months of your full monthly benefit — subject to any waiting period months that fall in this window.

Example timeline:

  • Onset date: February 2022
  • Application date: August 2023
  • Approval date: April 2025
  • Retroactive benefits: August 2022 through July 2023 (12 months max, less 5-month wait = 7 months of retroactive pay)
  • Accrued benefits: August 2023 through March 2025 = 20 months
  • Total back pay: approximately 27 months of your monthly benefit rate

SSI does not pay retroactive benefits before the application date. SSI back pay only covers the period from the month after application through approval.

Establishing the earliest defensible onset date is one of the most valuable things an attorney can do for you. Even moving the onset date back by one month can mean thousands of dollars in additional back pay. This analysis is part of every case we handle.
