Located just 15 miles from north Midtown Manhattan, Bronxville is a village in Westchester County, New York. History
The land on which Bronxville is situated belonged to British colonists in 1666 but had their first European settlers in the early 18th century. The Underhill and Morgan families became the first settlers. On the Bronx River, the Underhills constructed a sawmill and a gristmill, which was the area’s first factory. The area became known as Underhill’s Crossing after they built a wooden bridge.
By designing grand homes in a rustic atmosphere, millionaire real estate and pharmaceutical entrepreneur William Van Duzer Lawrence spurred Bronxville’s growth as an exclusive suburb of NYC. Lawrence’s influence grew exponentially following the second half of the 19th century after railroads began transporting workers throughout Westchester County into New York City.
