Background

Located in Westchester County, Yonkers spans along the Hudson River, and is the 4th city with the largest population in all of New York, after Rochester, Buffalo, and New York City. Yonkers is considered an inner suburban community within NYC and is north of the Bronx.

History

The land that Yonkers is situated on was once part of a Dutch 24,000-acre land grand named Colen Donck that rang from the Manhattan and Bronx border 12 miles towards the Hudson River and Bronx River. The land was then granted to Adriaen van der Donck, a lawyer and landowner in July of 1645.

Over the next 200 years, Yonkers remained a small farming town that began its economic development in the mid 19th century. In 1853, an American industrialist named Elisha Otis invented the first safety elevator and opened the first factory in the work near the Hudson River. Around the same time in the 1880s, Alexander Smith and Sons Carpet Company added to the expansion of the town with 45 buildings with help from over 4,000 workers.

Yonkers was a key element in the manufacturing industry and was a part of several historical inventions throughout the centuries. In the early 20th century, Leo Baekeland invented the first completely synthetic plastic components and manufactured them in Yonkers throughout the 1920s.
