Symptoms of a Stomach Virus

Symptoms for a stomach virus can vary, but chances are, you know when you have a stomach virus.  The symptoms can be so severe, that you may be forced to call in sick to work because you can’t control your symptoms.   

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Sweating
  • Headache

How Long Does a Stomach Virus Last?

Depending on the virus, the symptoms cast last from 24 hours to a week and a half.  There is no magic number, you usually have to wait and see.

What to do if you have a Stomach Virus

If you’re symptoms are severe, you should stay home to recover and reduce the risk of spreading the virus to others.

  • Rest for 3 hours
  • Don’t eat or drink anything for 3 hours
  • Slowly sip clear liquids to rehydrate yourself, after the 3 hours are up.  Choose liquids that are low in sugar and high in electrolytes.
  • Take probiotics
  • Maintain a BRAT diet until the symptoms subside

What is a BRAT Diet?

The BRAT diet includes foods that won’t irritate your stomach.  The BRAT diet should only be consumed when you can eat solid food without vomiting.  Stay on the BRAT diet for no more than 48 hrs.  Slowly add solid foods back in your diet for more balanced nutrition. 

  • Bananas
  • Rice
  • Applesauce
  • Toast
