The fact that Riverdale is located on a high hill that divides it from the rest of the city is one of the topographical qualities that lend it a suburban feel. At 284.5 feet above sea level, the ridge’s highest point is near Iselin Avenue and 250th Street in North Riverdale. The residential community is made up of single-family homes along with apartment-style complexes. The area is considered fairly safe, with a limited amount of serious crimes in the area.
Locals of North Riverdale united with Yonkers residents in protesting the development of the Riverdale Classic Residence, a 17-story retirement community on Riverdale Avenue, in 1998. Although the building would be located in Yonkers, people in North Riverdale were concerned that it would tower above the neighborhood’s smaller apartment buildings and single-family homes due to its location on the top of a hill. Despite the complaints, the building was completed at its original height without the need for a review.

On Riverdale Avenue, the Bx7 and Bx10 MTA Regional Bus Operations local buses, as well as the Bx9 on Broadway, service the neighborhood.
Riverdale Avenue is served by the BxM1, BxM2, and BxM18 express buses, while the BxM3 serves Broadway. In addition, the Bee-Line of Westchester County’s 1, 2, 1X, and 3 buses run through the area on their route to the 242nd Street Subway Station.
