When Was Chiropractic Care Invented?
Many historians will argue that chiropractic care has existed in some form for thousands of years. Physicians in all civilizations have realized the massage and spinal manipulation can make a patient feel better. However, the name and official form of medicine wasn’t invented until 1887.
The founder of chiropractic care, Daniel David Palmer, had an interaction with his janitor that inspired him to learn more about the spine and the connections in the body. While working in his office as a magnetic healer, Palmer looked up and saw that his janitor had a lump or knot near his spine. He inquired about the knot and was told that a few years prior, the janitor had been lifting a heavy object and felt a pop. Since that time, he had constant discomfort in his back. Palmer asked for the chance to try and help the man and performed his first spinal adjustment.
Excited by the relief that his patient felt after the adjustment, Palmer was inspired to create chiropractic care. He opened the Palmer School Of Chiropractic in 1887 and began to teach others about his findings.
Finding A Chiropractor
Today, there are more than 7,000 licensed chiropractors in the United States. Accident victims who are seeking a chiropractor should ask their general practitioner or other treating physician for a recommendation. If this fails, then asking friends and family for a recommendation is the next step.
Don’t be afraid to do your research and ask all of the questions that come to mind. It’s always important to feel comfortable with any treating physician.
Why Won’t My Chiropractor Prescribe Pain Medication?
Chiropractors don’t write prescriptions and focus instead on treating the body without drugs. However, chiropractors do work with other physicians and may recommend that you speak with your other treating physicians about pain relief.
