There are several elements that need to go into a workplace safety program to ensure it is effective and can meet its objectives. There are four main elements to consider. Each has its own level off responsibilities that create a safer work environment for all.
Management Leadership and Employee Involvement
This factor includes the involvement and effective communication of both employers and employees with a focus on workplace health and safety. Written safety rules and policies are to be posted in an accessible location. Employees are to remain involved in creating the workplace policies to be enforced. All workers are to actively participate in safety activities.
Workplace Analysis
This factor involves the identification and elimination of potential safety hazards as well as those that already exist. It also requires a routine analysis of the work environment where safety is concerned. Each employee should be made aware of the hazard analysis for each job and process. The design of the workplace will also need to be considered which includes the size and layout of the workspace, the tools and machinery being used, and the physical demands of each job duty. The ultimate goal of the design of the work space is ti ensure all workers are able to be productive and prevent incidents and accidents for extended of time.
Hazard Prevention and Control
This element of an overall safety plan involves the regular and proper maintenance of workplace vehicles and equipment. It also requires that employees understand how to properly use and maintain their personal protective gear and equipment for their own safety. Employees also need to be trained to deal with specific situations by understanding protocol for different safety situations.
Safety and Health Training/Education
In order for safety in the workplace to be effective, all persons in the environment will need to have the proper education and training including management, subcontractors, temporary employees, and even volunteers. Those in specific jobs or work areas should be authorized to do work that requires certifications and experienced. No employees should be performing work that does not appear to be safe. Drill for emergency situations should be routinely held and involve employees to ensure everyone is well-informed of protocol during emergencies. Management need proper training to identify hazards and ensure employees, especially new ones, have the right training and can also identify on the job hazards.
