Yonkers Historical Society

Founded in 1952, the Yonkers Historical Society was designed to dedicate their time and efforts to preserving the deeply rooted history of the City of Yonkers. Though the Society was founded in 1952, it was first formally organized in 1877 and was appointed by the Common Council of what then was the newly formed city.

Its main purpose was to begin collecting and preserving the early history of the city and has continued to add historically relevant information and artifacts throughout the years.

Sherwood House

In New York’s Westchester County, one of the few remaining pre-Revolutionary War fully furnished farmhouses still stand. Sherwood House, located off Tuckahoe Rd. in Yonkers, was originally built in 1740 by Thomas Sherwood.

The historic Sherwood House was threatened with demolition in the early 1950s by the Consolidated Edison Company of New York for the building of power lines. Luckily, the Society succeeded in saving the building and continues to help preserve the historic Museum.

History Of Sherwood House

In 1740, Thomas Sherwood built the farmhouse which ran along an old Native American trail. Several years later, Sherwood was elected to hold the position of Constable and Collector of Philipsburgh until 1779.

Over the years, the home was passed down and purchased by multiple owners and had many renovations done including the addition of a second floor. Around this same time in the late 1800s, a red barn was also built along with a stone wall nearby.

In 1962, the Sherwood House opened to the public, as a museum. Since then, the museum has undergone more construction and refurbishment.
