Hamptonburgh

The town of Hamptonburgh takes up 17,260.8 acres within the northern region of Orange County, New York. It includes 134.4 acres of water, such as Tomahawk Lake and Otter Kill. A few of the communities within the town are Burnside, Campbell Hall, Kipps, and Neelytown. Sarah Wells Trail cut through the town and offers a straight course to Goshen that is only 4.4 miles to the west. Other roadways are Egbertson Road, County Road 51, and Ridge Road.

History

In 1722, William Burr was granted 100 acres within the community for five shillings. He built his estate and named it after his birthplace in England, Hamptonburgh. The town garnered its name from the early settler’s estate. Burr had married Sarah Wells in 1718, and they had five sons and seven daughters, totaling twelve children. Sarah is credited for being the first woman to settle in the When Burr died in 1756, he left his estate and home to Sarah and was buried in the town’s cemetery, also known as Bull Burying Hill. The historic stone house, located off of County Road 51, can be toured today.

Neighborhood

The neighborhood is home to the family-owned and operated Bull’s Head Inn, located off Sarah Wells Trail. The restaurant is within a fully restored 18th-century farmhouse. The inn offers the residents a historical setting with fine dining since its first opening in 1967. A few of the dishes served include:

  • Falafel Napoleon
  • Pappardelle with Crab Meat
  • Pan-Seared Chilean Seabass

Another great gem in the town is the Twin View Stables, located off of Sarah Wells Trail. The family-owned and operated farm and boarding facility sit on a hill overlooking spectacular views of Campbell Hall. The owners, Jeff and Christine Digiso, have rescued over ten horses. Aside from selling their fresh crops and eggs at their farm stand, they offer equestrian services such as:

  • horse boarding
  • horse grooming
  • riding lessons
  • horse leasing

Demographics

By 2012, the community had a population of 5,542 residents. They created 1,718 households and 1,338 families within the borders. The racial makeup of the neighborhood included the following:

  • 92.3% white 
  • 3.9% African American
  • 6.5% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.0% Native American
  • 2.6% Asian
  • 1.1% two or more races

The median income was $96,693 per household and $106,389 per family. Men brought in a median income of $68,482, while women averaged $54,405. Some of the commonly represented professions within the working community included:

  • 14.32% management occupations
  • 10.32% office and administrative support roles
  • 6.53% healthcare professions
