Neighborhood Background

Cedar Knolls is known as a prosperous district located within the city of Yonkers in Westchester, New York. The suburban neighborhood consists of 104 acres with 143 historic and modern-style homes with tons of arts, sports, and businesses surrounding the area.

Cedar Knolls was a former artist society, and composer Jerome Kern and actor Charlie Chaplin both lived there at one point in their lives. Residents from a wide range of professions and industries have joined the community throughout the years.

Early History

Originally the grounds on which the Wiechquaeskeck tribe of the Lenape nation inhabited is now called Cedar Knolls. The tribe used the land for hunting, fishing, farming, and housing and ruled the majority of the territory that stretched from New York to Delaware Bay along the Middle Atlantic coast and settled along the banks of the rivers.

Colonial Era

Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian explorer, traveled up the estuarial inner harbor of New York in 1524 and wrote about “the river of the steep hills.” It took another 75 years for Henry Hudson, a Dutch East India Company sailor, to venture further up the river that carries his name today.

Eleaser Hart, a pioneer settler, purchased 154 acres of farmland in 1760, including a small house built in 1725, and named it Cedar Knolls Farm. He built a larger farmhouse on Bronxville Road, which still stands today, integrating the existing structure.

19th Century

Every mile or so along the line, train stations were built, and neighborhoods and towns developed around them. Underhill’s Crossing, later renamed Bronxville, was the site of one of these stations, which was built in 1844 on the site of a river ford. The trains traveled for about 90 minutes towards each destination and ran twice daily.

In 1876, Cedar Knolls Farm was purchased by Nathanial Valentine and was split up and subdivided into three artistic colonies, all under the name Armour Villa. The first was Armour Villa, the second was Lawrence Park, and the third was Cedar Knolls.
