Daniel David Palmer: The Founder Of Chiropractic Medicine

The year was 1885 and a magnetic healer named Daniel David Palmer was sitting in his office. A janitor had entered and was busy cleaning when Palmer noted that the man, who didn’t have a shirt on, had a knot near his spine. He asked the janitor about the knot and was told that it had been present for several years after the janitor had felt a pop while lifting a heavy object.

Palmer felt that he could help the janitor and asked to be allowed to try and treat him. He experimented with pressure and movement to try and put the man’s spine into alignment and was able to reduce the size of the knot. The janitor told Palmer he felt extreme relief.

According to legend, a few days later the janitor also told Palmer that his hearing, which was previously diminished, had improved. Palmer believed that by properly aligning the spine he had helped to improve several medical conditions. This caused him to learn as much as he could about the spine and the connections in the body. Two years later, in 1887, he opened the Palmer School Of Chiropractic.

Chiropractic Medicine In Current Times

Today, there are more than 7,000 licensed chiropractors throughout the United States, helping patients heal after a traumatic injury. These chiropractors practice drugless medicine, instead creating individualized treatments for each patient based on their medical history.

What Sort Of Injuries Do Chiropractors Treat?

Chiropractors most commonly treat:

  • shoulder injuries;
  • knee injuries;
  • muscle sprain and strain;
  • neck injuries;
  • back injuries.

Chiropractic adjustments shouldn’t cause a patient pain, however, some report feeling sore the next day.

The medical history of the patient and their specific injury will determine how long the patient will need to spend in the care of a chiropractor.
