Although it only had three wheels, most car enthusiasts agree that the first modern car was created in 1886 when Karl Benz obtained a patent for the “Motorwagen”. The vehicle was designed to move via an internal combustion engine and had a rear-seated engine. The top speed of the Motorwagen was 16 mph.

In 1893, Benz released a four-wheeled model. This is the same year that the first gasoline-powered American car was built, known as the Duryea Motor Wagon after the creators, the Duryea brothers.

These men were just a few that spent their lives working on designing and building the first “horseless carriages”. Over time, cars became popular enough and companies began to set up mass production facilities, making car parts cheaper and cars more affordable. Of course, with an increase in speed came an increase in the risk of being involved in an accident.

The World’s First Car Accident

Historians believe that the first official car accident took place in Ohio City, Ohio. James William Lambert was driving his single-cylinder gasoline-powered automobile in 1891 when the tire of the car hit a massive root on the road. This impact caused the car to spin out of control and Lambert and his passenger crashed into a hitching post. Thankfully, the injuries they sustained were minor which is impressive given the lack of safety features in early vehicles.

Since that time, roads have only become busier and cars faster. Millions of Americans are involved in accidents each year and even though safety features have improved, both cars and the passengers inside are damaged in these accidents.

Collision repair was an industry that naturally grew as car ownership became more popular. Today, car owners have a wide variety of auto body shops to choose from when they need work done on any part of their vehicle. The workers’ comp attorneys at The Disability Guys understand how important it is to work with a mechanic you trust.
