Where Was The First Car Made?
After the invention of the steam engine in the 1700s, many inventors tried to build a form of personal transportation using an engine. Although there is some debate, many historians agree that the first person to build a version of the modern car was Karl Benz.
Karl Benz patented a two-stroke gasoline engine in 1879. Then in 1886, he received another patent for the “Motorwagen”, a three-wheeled vehicle that was gasoline-powered. Not long after, Benz also built a four-wheeled version. Over the next several years, he sold about 25 Motorwagens.
Several other inventors also built their versions of the modern car, in France, Germany, and the United States.
In fact, one of the American inventors was the first person to have a car accident.

Like Ben, James William Lambert’s first car was three-wheeled, with one in the front and two in the back. When he took it for a drive one day, he hit a root and the car was unable to absorb the small impact. He lost control of the wheel and the car crashed into a hitching post. Lambert and his friend who was riding as a passenger both survived with minor injuries.
Later on, Lambert build a four-wheeled model and although it was stable, the engine caught fire during a drive and the car burned.
