Founded in 1982 by Ralph and Leuba Baum, The Judaica Museum showcases historical pieces of Jewish art straight from the Hebrew Home.
Ralph Baum, a refugee from Nazi persecution, had a deep desire to preserve and pass on the legacy embodied in the artifacts he and his wife gathered to future generations, most of which were used mainly before the Holocaust.
The Museum officially opened to the public in June of 2009, and was well-liked and appreciated by guests from all over. Today, the museum’s newly expanded 5,000 square foot space, was created by architect Louise Braverman and is located in the Jacob Reingold Pavilion at The Hebrew Home at Riverdale.
Museumgoers who visit today can find a few of these featured exhibits with tons of historical relevance and artifacts to discover and relish. The Impressions of Eastern Europe features prints that date back to the early 20th century and extend into the early 1970s.
Some of the most important art movements from this century include lithography, etching, woodcuts, and engraving, done by 16 artists. The majority of these 16 artists emigrated from their home countries, such as Austria and the Russian Empires.
Another renowned exhibit to see is The Derfner Judaica Museums Tradition and Remembrance exhibition that holds approximately 250 artifacts and objects that commemorate Jewish history.
The objects found in this exhibit are used to symbolize the role of traditional Jewish practices that assisted in shaping and molding their identities individually and in society.
