Woodlawn Heights

Woodlawn Heights is situated in the northern region of the Bronx borough in New York City, New York. The 396.8-acre area is part of the Bronx Community Board 12. It is located just south of Southeast Yonkers and west of Wakefield. The Woodlawn Cemetery separates it from Norwood, while the Van Cortlandt Park separates it from Fieldston. The Bronx River runs just outside of the border that Webster Avenue forms.

History

The Lenape Native Americans were the first to inhabit the area before the influx of European settlers that began in 1639. The area was originally part of Westchester County, but in 1873 was split off, and in 1898, the borough of the Bronx was formed as part of the City of New York, within New York County. The 400-acre Woodlawn Cemetery opened during the Civil War in 1863 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011.

Neighborhood

The neighborhood is predominantly an Irish-American working-class community. Along Katonah Avenue are many Irish restaurants and pubs that honor the tradition and heritage. Some of these include:

  • the Rambling House
  • the Lark’s Nest
  • the Just One Saloon

The area is also home to the historical Woodlawn Heights Presbyterian Church, or Emmanuel Presbyterian Reformed Church, which was founded in 1911 by a group of residents. Initially, services were held in their homes. The Presbytery of New York formally recognized the church in 1913. The Gothic Revival-style stone church was built in 1914. The steeple was home to a bell at one time, but after many years, it was removed, and the area was filled.

Demographics

Per the census taken in 2010, the neighborhood’s population was 42,483. This was a 2.5% decrease from the count in 2000, 43,583. The racial makeup of the area was the following:

  • 16.1% Hispanic or Latino
  • 3.4% Asian
  • 0.4% Native American
  • 0.0% Pacific Islander

While 80% of the population speaks English as their primary language, Spanish and Italian are also spoken. Urdu, the language of Pakistan, is also spoken by 1% of the residents.
