On Sunday, June 18th, 2017, a 58-year-old man was working on scaffolding on Nostrand Ave when the unthinkable happened. According to police, he slipped and fell, but instead of landing on the scaffolding he fell over the edge and went three stories to the ground below. He sustained a traumatic brain injury and sadly passed away from his injuries.
Most people are aware of ambulances, but there is another type of medical transport vehicle called an ambulette. Just recently, one of these transport vans overturned at Fulton Ave, causing injuries to the driver. Police have yet to determine why the vehicle flipped.
On Wednesday, June 21st, 2017, at around 1 a.m., a bus went in reverse down a Brooklyn street. It gained speed and went down Palmetto St until it crashed into several cars and crashed into the wall of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. One person was injured.

On April 2nd, 2018, an employee at a food market in East Flatbush was killed while moving goods. Police arrived on scene after being called because a “freight elevator” collapsed on the man, however, when they arrived it was actually a poorly made hoist. The initial investigation showed that the hoist was illegally installed and completed lacked the required safety guards which is ultimately what caused the collapse and death of the man who was trapped underneath.
The floor at a Brooklyn demolition site collapsed, sending the man standing on top of it plummeting into the basement of the structure. It took more than an hour for firefighters and medics to rescue him due to the fact that the basement walls needed to be shored up before anyone else could enter safely. Once removed from the building, the victim was rushed to the hospital where he was treated for serious injuries.
At least three firefighters sustained injuries while fighting a three-alarm fire in Brooklyn. The blaze consumed a three-story building in Crown Heights despite the fact that firefighters responded quickly to a 9:15 pm call.
While working on a 184-year-old landmarked house in Brooklyn, a construction worker fell from the roof while placing shingles. He fell onto the porch, landing on his head. He was then rushed to the hospital and has been listed in critical condition. His employer has been fined for having inadequate fall protection at the worksite.
During the 28th Annual NYC Century Bike Tour, four participants were seriously injured by a drunk driver. The driver, who police have reported was not only drunk but also unlicensed, stopped behind the bicyclists at a red light but suddenly accelerated, hitting many of them and knocking them off their bikes. Then he reversed backing over a 55-year-old woman and pinned her under the car. The driver remained on the scene and was arrested while emergency responders rushed the woman to the hospital where she was noted to be in critical condition. Paramedics also treated three other riders.
Two workers were injured on Thursday, 28 September 2017, in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. The workers were injured in an accident at a construction site in Brooklyn. According to authorities, the workers were conscious and alert. No other details were immediately available in this accident. However, photographers on the scene stated that the area had metal joists that were not holding. It is likely the floor collapsed.
A power outage on a construction site ended fatally for a construction worker. The construction worker was a 53-year old man who had returned on site after work. According to reports, the man got stuck in an elevator during a power outage in the building he had returned to. The Brooklyn construction worker tried to open the elevator doors himself so that he could crawl out. Unfortunately, the power came back on unexpectedly and caused the elevator to move again and crushed the man between the doors of the elevator and the floor.
An accident that took place Thursday, June 29, 2017, inside Tampa Electric’s Big Bend Power Station, killed one employee and one contractor and critically injured four other contractors. According to the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, the blast happened before 5 p.m. at the plant. The four injured workers were transported by ground and air to Tampa General Hospital. OSHA was on the scene investigating this incident on Friday, June 30, 2017. This investigation could take weeks before it is clear what caused the fatal blast to happen.
A spillway worker who was operating an excavator as he removed debris from the Feather River at the base of the spillway, was involved in an accident. According to authorities, the contract worker was injured in a heavy equipment accident. An excavator next to him struck the cab of the first excavator and injured the man inside. The injured man was transported to hospital by helicopter and fortunately, he was released quickly. He is believed to be recovering well after he had hit his head in the accident. His time away from work was estimated to be short too.
New legislation that loosens the reporting requirements faced by employers when workers get hurt or sick because of their jobs, has been signed by President Trump. This new bill shortens the amount of time that employers in dangerous industries are required to keep accurate records of worker injuries. The period has been changed from five years to only six months. The unfortunate thing about this new bill is that it will rollback OSHA’s record-keeping rule and allow unscrupulous companies to doctor their injury data and hide ongoing hazards from regulators. This could also lead to OSHA having a harder time identifying recurring problems with certain employers and in other industries.
A construction worker died recently after he was entangled in equipment and building materials at a construction site. Police responded to calls of a worker who was in distress, unfortunately by the time they arrived the victim was entangled in equipment and was dead on the scene. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, as well as medical examiners, are investigating the man’s death.
A man has been listed as being in critical condition after he fell 15 feet into a hole while working. Investigators have indicated his accident took place because a backhoe hit a utility pole which then toppled over and pushed him into the hole. For more information on this check out CBS Local.
