Mechanicstown

The hamlet of Mechanicstown helps to make up the Town of Walkill in Orange County, New York. This small town is a census-designated place, or CDP, that takes up 2,176 acres. Other towns that help form the greater area include Scotchtown, East Middletown, New Hampton, Michigan Corners, and Washington Heights.

History

The community was named after the industrial mechanics that settled in the area. Early development began around the forge and works of Messrs. Otis & Miller. A hotel and a glove factory were the first businesses following the establishment of a feed mill.

Neighborhood

Residents can enjoy the many different retail and dining options in a single location at the Walkill Plaza, located on Route 211 East. Some of the shopping stores include:

The schools within the community are part of the Middletown City School District. Most of the residents are zoned for the following schools:

  • Middletown High School – located on Gardner Ext Avenue

Attractions

In the southern region of the hamlet is Fantasy Balloon Flights, Inc. The hot air balloon attraction has been a significant part of the neighborhood for over 38 years. In addition to a flight certificate keepsake, each trip includes complimentary champagne. The owners and operators, Lana and Ken Smith have appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Orange County Choppers. They offer trips over the Hudson Valley Region and all of Orange County.

Above the Clouds is another hot air balloon attraction located nearby. This competing company has been soaring the skies of the Lower Hudson Valley for over 34 years. As many as 15,000 passengers have graced the balloons owned and operated by Chris and Deena. Kids camps are welcome to enjoy the tethered flights.

The Orange County Fair Speedway is located in the center of the town, off Wisner Avenue. In addition to the Saturday Nights races, many races take place throughout the year, such as:

Demographics

The community grew from 6,061 in 2000 to 6,858 in 2010. The breakdown of the residents’ racial makeup included the following:

  • 47.1% white 
  • 20.9% African American
  • 28.6% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.3% Native American
  • 3.1% Asian

The median income was $45,817 per household, while an income for a family averaged $51,699. Men brought in an average of $35,918 per year versus $28,640 for women. The employed adults represent many different occupations, such as:

  • 32.3% sales and service jobs
  • 26.0% manufacturing and laborer occupations
  • 25.8% executive, management, and professional positions
  • 15.9% clerical, assistant, and technical support roles
