New York City

The city of New York is located in the state of New York on the Atlantic Coast. The city takes up 302,355.2 acres, of which 110,060.8 acres consist of water, such as the East River, Harlem River, the Bronx River, and the Hudson River. It includes five boroughs which are Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, state Island, and the Bronx.

Early History

The Algonquian Native Americans first inhabited the area. This included the Lenape Tribes. The Dutch were the first Europeans to gain control of the region in 1624. They founded the Dutch fur trading settlements situated on Governors Island. The Dutch West India Company lead the trade and production of timber, food, and slaves. Peter Stuyvesant became the last Director-General of this area known as New Netherland in 1647. His reign would not last long as the British would force him to surrender the area in 1664.
