Getting around New York can be challenging for anyone, but for those with disabilities, transportation can be especially daunting. Fortunately, there is ParaTransit, a shared ride service that provides transportation to the elderly and disabled population in New York. Here in Westchester County the service runs along the Bee-Line bus service corridors. And, though ParaTransit usually charges a fare of $5.00 per trip, Westchester County recently announced that the service will be free to those who qualify from now until September 1, 2024.

This is good news for those who cannot access the subway system or regular buses due to disabilities, and rely on ParaTransit for shopping, medical appointments, and just getting out and about. It’s estimated that this service provides up to 1500 rides daily.

A Little Background

In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), was passed to “remove barriers that prevent people with disabilities from fully participating in American society.” When it comes to public transportation, the ADA states that regular bus service should be the primary means of public transportation for everyone, including those with disabilities. 

Under the ADA, transportation agencies like the Westchester County Department of Transportation are required to provide “origin-to-destination, curb-to-curb, demand responsive ParaTransit service that mirrors their fixed route service.” Keep in mind, this service is meant for those who cannot ride Bee-Line buses due to disabilities. 

According to the transit service, ParaTransit is the fastest-growing ridership base in New York, serving nearly 1 million New Yorkers with disabilities.

Do You Qualify?

If your disability prevents you from using public transportation, you can apply to use the ParaTransit service. There are specific requirements that must be met before a person can take advantage of this service. In general, a person must be “functionally unable to use the regular Bee-Line service,” which includes those who need a wheelchair lift-equipped bus or van. The Importance of Transportation

The ability to get around is a necessity and should be available to everyone. Mass transit helps New Yorkers enjoy all the great things the city has to offer, but for those with disabilities, it can be inaccessible. ParaTransit fills this gap, which can make a world of difference for many people, including Dr. Marcella Maxwell, who became a regular ParaTransit rider after a debilitating injury.

“ParaTransit has been one of the most important components of my recovery,” said Dr. Maxwell, a retired educator. “I’m able to go out every day, and I’m able to participate in my physical therapy. ParaTransit opens up opportunities and makes the world bigger for those with disabilities.” 

And from now until September 1, Dr. Maxwell and others with disabilities can take advantage of this important service for free.
