New York Increases 3 Key Benefits for Injured and Disabled Workers

Injured and disabled workers in New York could see some a decent raise in their next benefits check. New York has been working on a benefits increase that could help New Yorkers in 2024.

The benefits in question? The Mileage Reimbursement Rate, the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), and increased benefits that you could earn each month.

Both the Mileage Reimbursement Rate and the COLA are updated every year, depending on the economy New York State law. Here are the latest updates for 2024:

New York’s Benefits Increase for 2024

Mileage Reimbursement can help pay you back for any travel expenses related to your injury or disability. This includes travel to approved consultations, appointments, therapy sessions, and any other reason that you have to travel. Whether you drove a car, called a cab, took the train, or even used a rideshare app, like Uber.

Starting Jan. 1, 2024, Workers’ Comp insurance companies now pay $0.67 per mile traveled, a 2-cent increase from 2023’s rate.

Keep track of dates, distances, and receipts, both paper and digital. You can submit your claim with a special C-257 form.

The Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) activates in September 2024 and will last through August 2025, when it will be updated again.

This year, the COLA for upcoming benefit payments is set at 2.5%. This means that you could earn an extra $2.50 for every $100 you make, up to $37.50 for $18,000.

When workers get hurt and are unable to work, either due to illness or injury, that means they can’t clock in and earn their wages. Workers’ Comp helps cover that.

Right now, the maximum weekly benefit that an injured worker can receive is $1,145. This depends on how much you make while working and how severe your injury is. The minimum benefit has also increased to $250/week in 2024.

A rate adjustment is due in July once again, where the rate will likely jump up another couple hundred dollars.
