Shin Split Recovery Time is Important to Healing

Shin splints occur in the lower leg area known as the shin when the muscles of the leg are overstretched or overused. While most people associate shin splints as a condition only athletes get, the reality is anyone can suffer the aching and weakness shin splints cause.

 

An aggravated, overworked muscle may not be a serious medical issue on its own but continuing to overuse an already-injured muscle can become a big deal. Those affected by shin splints are advised to rest their muscles and take anti-inflammatory medications to promote healing. However, people unfamiliar with shin splints or those who do not seek a medical diagnosis may incur additional injuries if muscles are not able to heal properly.

 

Those experiencing shin splints should seek a doctor’s advice on treating the condition as soon as pain is noticed. Underlying problems that result in shin splints include stress fractures in the lower bone of the leg. Unhealed muscles and bones that are put back to work without the proper healing time can lead to more serious, more debilitating conditions.

 

If you have been experiencing pain, weakness, or numbness in the lower leg or foot area, it may be necessary to seek medical treatment to rule out more serious issues. Following the doctor’s orders will also be important. Not all people recover from shin splints at the same rate so you’ll need to follow the directions of the doctor to promote proper healing.

 

It may be necessary to suspend your normal activities including physical work until the leg muscles or fractures have had time to heal. A doctor may be able to offer a medical excuse or you may need to limit your physical activity on the job and on the home front.
