Attractions
One of the most well-known and visited attractions in Dunwoodie is the Yonkers Raceway, located nearby in Wakefield Park, a part of the Empire City Casino. Originally named the Empire City Race Track, the half-mile racing track begins on Central Park Avenue and works its way through to Yonkers Avenue.
William H. Clark’s Empire City Trotting Club opened Yonkers Raceway in 1899, and it is considered a city landmark. Clark died in 1900, and the track remained closed for the next seven years, except for special occasions, leading to plenty of lawsuits by his descendants over the potential sale.
The attraction was purchased by American businessman James Butler, who reopened the track in 1907 for Thoroughbred horse racing. During its time as a horse racing track, notable thoroughbreds raced, with the most prominent being Seabiscuit, who won the Scarsdale Handicap. Upon Butler’s death in 1934, the track was converted back to its original form as a harness track for resident entertainment.
