New Hampton

The hamlet of New Hampton is situated in the northeastern region of Wawayanda in Orange County, New York. History

The southern edge rests on the Black Dirt Region that is within the Pine Island and Florida communities. Early farmers avoided the area because the soil, despite its rich qualities, was often flooded and drained poorly. Instead, the land was used for pasture, even though flash flooding would cause much of the livestock to drown. Beginning in 1804, the community began to plan to drain the swamp. Clearing the obstacles was the first step, but it was too expensive. General George D. Wickham constructed a drainage canal through his property in 1835. Immigrants from Eastern Europe that were familiar with the soil began farming the land. By the mid-19th century, a series of conflicts with millers downstream, known as “the Muskrat and Beaver Wars,” prevented a dam from being built on the drainage canal. Future plans of development are highly unlikely since the soil is too unstable for building.

By the late 20th century, the area produced an average of 30,000 lb per acre of onions. Hemp is one of the newest crops that thrive in the rich soil. Farmers in the region have included other crops, such as:
