Gardnertown

The community is a hamlet and a census-designated place within the town of Newburg in Orange County, New York. The neighborhood spans 3,136 acres and includes waterways such as Winona Lake, Quassaic Creek, and sections of Gidneytown Creek. Some of the closest towns include Balmville and Orange Lake.

History

The area was named after an early settler, Silas Gardner. His old home still stands just off of Route 300, north of Route 52, has been officially recognized as a historic place. The community was the location of a gunpowder mill located on Powder Mill Road. Ruins are still seen throughout Algonquin Park.

Historical Landmarks

The Orange Mill Historic District is located off of Powder Mill Road. This 42-acre section was named after the gunpowder mill complex established in 1816 by Asa Taylor. After 1869 the mill was run by the Laflin & Rand Powder Company. The district includes 14 buildings that were once contributing properties to the mill complex. Most of the mill buildings are without roofs or walls, but many can be seen along the creek. The main building is the only 19th-century gunpowder facility in the state still standing.

The Gardnertown Methodist Church was built at its current location in 1858. It is located at Gardnertown Road and Union Avenue intersection and replaced the earlier building built in 1825. The church is affiliated with the oldest cemeteries in use, the Gardnertown Cemetery, which is located east of the building across Union Avenue.

Within the population of 4,533 residents, there were 1,624 households and 1,221 families in 2000. As many as 37.7% had children younger than 18 years old residing with them. The community racial breakdown was the following:

The average income per household within the hamlet was $55,655, while the family income average was $65,000. Women brought in an annual income average of $30,308, while men averaged $42,230.
