Should You Exercise With a Work Injury?

There are multiple work-related injuries that can be worsened by additional work related activities and exercise movements. It is important to discuss with your doctor before attempting any additional activities to prevent re-injury or a prevention of healing. In many on the job injuries, physical therapy is prescribed under the direction of a medical professional. Any activities outside of that therapeutic setting can prove hazardous to one’s health.

Exercise is a necessity to keep fit and in some instances speed up the healing process of an injury. There are many light exercises that can be done to ensure muscles are kept flexible and circulation is good to promote healing. Yoga and stretching exercises can be done on a level you are comfortable with and will keep you active. Heavier exercise like running and cardio activity can be too much for you to handle while injured. Again, it is best to consult with your medical provider before attempting to do exercises while in recovery.

Re-Injury Concern

When dealing with a work injury, it is best to follow the doctor’s orders to prevent re-injuring the affected area or hinder the healing process or a work-injury can turn even more serious – potentially putting you out of work for a longer time. Additionally not allowing an area of injury to heal properly increases the risk of re-injury in the future.

Remember that it is also very important to have a work injury diagnosed as soon as possible before resuming normal activities. Often people will dismiss injuries in order to continue their job tasks and as a result their work injury will become worse with the potential to put you out of work for an extended period of time. This also means you will likely lose pay and your potential worker’s compensation claim can be voided.
