Park Hill

Park Hill is an unincorporated community situated in Southwest Yonkers in Westchester County, New York. The main roadways include Park Hill Avenue, Van Cortlandt Park Avenue, and Rumsey Road.

History

In 1888 the area’s land was purchased from Robert Parkhill Getty by the American Real Estate Company of Manhattan. Getty was a prominent business owner and civic leader during the 1800s. The area was named after Robert Parkhill Getty, as was Getty Square, located in downtown Yonkers. The neighborhood was one of the first planned residential communities within the metropolitan area of New York.

The Park Hill Incline, now the site of two private residences, utilized a funicular railroad that connected the Getty Square Branch of the New York and Putnam Railroad to Alta Avenue. It ran from 1894 until 1937. The style of cable railway could connect two locations that were located on steep slopes. A cable permanently attached them to either end in order to secure that they remained on the parallel tracks. This concept was established in the 1820s and provided low-cost solutions to otherwise difficult terrain.

Historical Landmarks

The two wrap-around porches provide a view of the Hudson River, and the observatory tower offers a 360-degree view of the town, including the Manhattan skyline.

The St. Denis Church, located on Van Cortlandt Park Avenue, was opened in 1912. The English Gothic-style stone church is home to many beautiful windows adorned with stained glass and bright red doors. In 1928, a school ran by the church was opened across the avenue. The church ceased services in 2015 following the school’s closing in 2006 due to a decline in enrollment.
