Our Favorite Musicals Currently on Broadway in NYC

Broadway and West 34th

If you’re a fan of the performing arts and planning to visit New York City, you’re likely looking to check out a Broadway show. The street that has become synonymous with theater and musicals is just as popular as ever, with a huge selection of excellent performances to choose from. Our New York City workers comp lawyers try to take in at least one Broadway show per year. Here are some of our current favorites on Broadway:

Pretty Woman: The Musical

Pretty Woman: The Musical is a Broadway musical adaptation of one of the most popular romantic comedies of all time, which starred Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. The musical tells the unlikely love story of Vivian and Edward and puts a new spin on these iconic characters. Andy Karl stars as Edward and Samantha Barks is riveting in her portrayal of Vivian Ward.

The Lion King

This live-action rendition of one of Disney’s most iconic animated films has been enthralling audiences on Broadway for over 20 years. This is a great show to go to as a family, as parents may feel nostalgic from watching the original film in their youth, and both kids and parents will love the unbelievable stage design, costumes, music, and choreography of the Broadway performance. Bradley Gibson stars as Simba, L. Stephen Taylor plays Mufasa, and Adrienne Walker plays Nala.

The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera debuted on Broadway in 1988 and is still running today, making it the longest-running show in Broadway history – and it’s not even close. The show has been so long-lasting for good reason and won the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical. The show is estimated to have grossed over $5.6 billion worldwide,  making it the second-most financially successful Broadway show after The Lion King.

The Book of Mormon

Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, The Book of Mormon is an irreverent musical named for the sacred Mormon text. The story follows two young missionaries in Uganda as they try to convert citizens of the country to Mormonism. This musical strikes a perfect balance between well-written characters, huge laughs, and entertaining musical numbers.

School of Rock – The Musical

School of Rock – The Musical is based on the popular film of the same name, which starred Jack Black. The Broadway rendition is the newest project from Andrew Lloyd Webber. The musical tells the story of aspiring rock star Dewey Finn, a prep school substitute teacher who helps his students form a rock group and win the Battle of the Bands.
