History

The Old Stone House, located in the Gowanus section of Kings County, has been part of Brooklyn history dating back to 1699. It first belonged to a community of a few hundred Dutch farmers and is known as the site of the largest battle, the American Revolutionary War.

The House also made its mark as a site during the Battle of Brooklyn in August 1776. As the outcome of the Battle of Brooklyn was in favor of the British, General Washington and his army fought against the British in 1783, eventually winning the war and making American an independent nation.

In 1883, the House also made another debut as the first home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, where they played at Washington Baseball Park. The ballpark was conveniently located nearby the Old Stone House near Gowanus Creek.

Today, The Old Stone House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the Historic House Trust of New York City. OSH remains a conservancy organization for Washington Park and provides educational programs and workshops for students, small artists, and families annually.
