North Riverdale
North Riverdale is located in the northern region of the Riverdale community within the Bronx borough in New York City, New York. The town of Ludlow is to its north and Fieldston is to its south. South Broadway forms the neighborhood’s eastern border while the Hudson River flows along its western edge.
History
During the 19th century, the area became home to many Manhattans dignitaries. They built their estates throughout the area. Major development did not begin until the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad began to travel through the town. This brought many of the elites and wealthy businessmen to make the area their year-round residence. Despite the influx of apartment developments throughout the area in the 20th century, the neighborhood is still home to a predominantly wealthy population.
Education
The neighborhood is home to many schools. With the history of a high population of wealthy residents, there are many elite private schools for the residents to attend. Some of these include:
- St. Margaret of Cortona School – located on West 260th Street
- Riverdale Montessori School – located on Mosholu Avenue
- College of Mount Saint Vincent – located on Riverdale Avenue
- Russian Misson School – located on West 255th Street
Notable Places
The neighborhood is home to several notable residences. The James Strain House, located on Ladd Road was constructed in 1970 by Keith Kroger Assocs for Drs. James and Gladys Strain. The geometrical architecture is a focal point to the area. The Riverdale Yacht Club, located on West 245th Street was built in 1880. The Riverdale Neighborhood House, found on Mosholu Avenue, was established in 1872 and has been serving the community in various ways over the last years, including:
- 1890s – served as headquarters for the Relief Society of Soldiers & Sailors during the Spanish-American War
- 1910s – houses Red Cross Civilian Relief Committee
- 1980s – hosts job banks and counseling for teens in an effort to help the war on drugs and unemployment
Demographic
In addition to the rest of the Riverdale neighborhood, the population was 27,860. The racial makeup of the area was the following:
- 67.5% white
- 7.7% African American
- 17.6% Hispanic or Latino
- 5.3% Asian
- 0.1% Native American
- 0% Pacific Islander
- 0.3% other races
- 1.6% two or more races
As many as 24.5% of the neighborhood’s citizens were born outside of the United States. While English is spoken by 63.1% of the townspeople, 2.5% speak Russian and others speak Spanish and French. The following is a breakdown of the most common ancestries the residents identify as:
- 12.2% Irish
- 7.5% Puerto Rican
- 6.9% Russian
- 6.9% German
- 6.6% Asian
