Goshen
The village of Goshen is situated in the central region of Orange County in the state of New York. The 2,124.8-acre community is part of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown metropolitan area in addition to the larger New York metropolitan area. Some of the neighboring communities are Hamptonburgh, Kipps, Campbell Hall, Chester, and New Hampton. The main roadways that travel through the town are New York State Route 17, Chester Avenue, Greenwich Avenue, and Scotchtown Avenue.
History
In 1714 the settlement of the area began, and by 1809 it was incorporated. Following the split of Rockland County from Orange County, the town became the county seat in 1798. Although it shared this title with Newburgh for a while, the town has been the central location for all government functions since the late 19th century.
During the early 1750s, horse racing took place along the street that is now Main Street. A circular track was constructed in 1838 that went around the property of the circus. This historic track is the oldest horse racing facility in the country and still operated a week out of each year. The Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame was opened in 1951 to commemorate the village’s equestrian history. Originally the museum was built as stables for the horses in 1913. Many equine artists have their artwork on display at the museum, including racing memorabilia that dates back to the start of the sport.
Historical Landmarks
Within the village are several historical monuments, buildings, and landmarks. One, in particular, is the Orange Blossoms monument located downtown at the intersection of Main Street and Park Place. The monument is dedicated to the 124th New York Infantry Regiment. In 1862, during the Civil War, this volunteer regiment formed in the village and took part in several battles, such as:
- Battle of Fredericksburg
- Battle of Chancellorsville
- Battle of the Wilderness
- Battle of Cold Harbor
Further down Main Street is the historic courthouse, built in 1841. Thornton M. Niven designed the courthouse in an identical Greek Revival style as the Newburgh courthouse. The building was used as the main courthouse until 1970, when the Orange County Government Center proved more beneficial and spacious.

According to the count taken in 2000, the village’s population was 5,676 people, which consisted of 2,039 households and 1,227 families. The racial breakdown of the citizens was the following:
