Covering 85 acres along the Brooklyn side of the East River, Brooklyn Bridge Park is one of the most popular green spaces in New York City. What was once an industrial stretch has been transformed into a diverse park with six different piers and a variety of attractions. These piers all have something unique to offer, but Pier 6 is probably our favorite. Governors Island Ferry
The Governors Island Ferry is located at Pier 6, providing easy access to the island, where there are many entertaining events throughout the warmer months of the year. This ferry runs on Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Mondays beginning on Memorial Day and running through Halloween.
Dog Run
If you’re looking to let your dog run free in a beautiful environment, Pier 6 is one of your best bets. While your dog is required to be on-leash in every other area of Brooklyn Bridge Park, at the Dog Run, you can let him or her run leash-free. Just make sure to stay in control of your dog at all times, pick up their waste, and don’t let them dig any holes. There are also volunteer organizations you can join, which provides a good opportunity to let your dog socialize with others, and for you to meet fellow dog owners.
Food and Drink Options
During a nice spring, summer, or early fall day at Pier 6, you’ll have several options for delicious food and drinks. Some of our favorite choices here include:
- Ample Hills Creamery – Ample Hills Creamery features 10 different ice cream flavors, along with various beverages, baked goods, and all kinds of snacks at their concession stand.
- Fornino – Fornino offers a variety of delicious food with some of the best views in the city. Situated between the beach volleyball courts and playgrounds, their rooftop seating boasts gorgeous views of the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan. You can enjoy delicious pizza, sandwiches, artisanal sodas, ice cream, and cocktails while taking in one of the world’s most iconic skylines. Sunset makes for especially majestic views.
- Lizzmonade – These Brooklyn-made artisanal lemonades are unbelievably refreshing and hit the spot perfectly when you need a cold drink on a hot day at the pier. You can also pair your drink with light snacks.
- Luke’s Lobster – Luke’s offers some of the absolute best lobster rolls you can find in New York City. This location is in the Smokestack Building. Choose from a wide range of seafood dishes, including their famous lobster rolls, soups, lobster tail salad, and other choices.
- Pilot – Pilot is a wooden schooner floating along Pier 6. You can enjoy their signature cocktails, oysters, and other summer foods while aboard this historic vessel.
Playgrounds
With five themed playgrounds, Pier 6 is a great place to bring the kids for a fun summer day. These five parks include:
- Sandbox Village – One of the largest sandbox complexes in NYC.
- Water Lab – This is the most popular playground, featuring a water-jet field for cooling down from the summer heat.
- Slide Mountain – Features 2-story slides and complex jungle gyms.
- Marsh Garden – An immersive natural environment where you and your kids can appreciate the beauty of Brooklyn’s nature.
- Swing Valley – Features include ten swing-sets and various Tarzan ropes.
Volleyball Courts
If you’re looking to get active in the outdoors, Pier 6 offers three regulation-size sand volleyball courts. You can either join a pickup game or apply for a permit for an official league. The Brooklyn Bridge Conservancy also partners with Big City Volleyball to host a 6v6 co-ed volleyball league every year. It’s a great way to make new friends or have fun with old ones.
