After an injury, many New York workers seek an assessment and care with a chiropractor. Chiropractors do not prescribe medications and they do not perform surgeries. Instead, doctors seek to improve a patient’s overall health by realigning the musculoskeletal system and improving the connections in the body.
Who Invented Modern Chiropractic Care?
The father of modern chiropractic care is Daniel David Palmer. Formerly a magnetic healer, Palmer was interested in any form of medicine that did not use medications. In 1885, a janitor in his building was going about his daily cleaning when Palmer noted a knot in the man’s back. When he asked about it, the janitor told him that years before, he had been lifting something and heard a pop. Since then, he had experienced ongoing discomfort in his spine. Palmer offered to try and correct the knot and succeeded by applying gentle pressure and movement.
The janitor told him that he felt immediate relief.
Two years later, Palmer opened the Palmer School of Chiropractic. In less than two decades, Kansas became the first state to recognize chiropractic care as a form of medicine, requiring practitioners to obtain a license. Today, more than 7,000 licensed chiropractors offer their services in the United States.
Why Should Injured Workers Consider Seeing A Chiropractor?
Patients who see a chiropractor report that they experience:
- a significant reduction in pain;
- improved quality of sleep;
- increased range of motion;
- improved mobility.
Chiropractic care is often undergone in conjunction with other medical treatments and it is not uncommon for surgeons to recommend that a patient see a chiropractor before undergoing surgery. Chiropractic care can strengthen and prepare the body for a surgical procedure, which improves recovery time.
Do Chiropractic Adjustments Hurt?
Anytime that an injury is manipulated there can be a certain amount of discomfort, but generally speaking, no, chiropractic adjustments do not hurt. Some patients do report feeling sore the next day.
Questions To Ask A Chiropractor
Like any other medical professional, a patient should feel comfortable with their chiropractor. Questions that may help to identify the right chiropractor for you include:
- How long have you been in practice?
- Can you provide references?
- What type of treatment do you recommend for my injury?
- Have you treated injuries similar to mine before?
- How long do you anticipate I will need to be in your care?
- Will you work with my other physicians?
