When Karl Benz patented and released a three-wheeled vehicle in 1886 known as a “Motorwagen”, the world was excited by this internal combustion engine powered mode of transportation. A few years later, Benz debuted a four-wheeled vehicle. At the same time, the Duryea brothers built the first gasoline-powered car in America, calling it the Duryea Motor Wagon.
It wasn’t long before the manufacturing world began to mass produce auto parts, parts which were used to build new cars and to also make repairs to damaged ones. After all, once the first cars were built, it wasn’t long before the first car accidents took place.
Who Was Involved In The First Car Accident?
In Ohio City, Ohio, James William Lambert purchased a single-cylinder gasoline powered car. He loved taking his new automobile for rides and one day encouraged a friend to join him. While the two men were in the car, one of the tires hit a large tree root and Lambert lost control of the vehicle. The entire car went off the road and into a hitching post.
Lambert and his friend were not seriously injured, however, the car was damaged.
Lambert certainly wasn’t the last driver to be involved in either a single car or multi-vehicle accident. This, in addition to the desire to sell as many cars as possible in a short period of time, pushed manufacturers to mass produce parts for their cars. Eventually, individual mechanics opened their own auto body shops.

Picking an auto body shop can be stressful. Important things to consider include:
- What certifications do the mechanics have? There are many different types of certifications in the automobile world. Ask about the certifications that the mechanics working on your car has. Specifically, ask if they are certified to work on the make and model of your car.
- Does the auto body shop have good reviews? Be sure to Google the auto body shops you are considering to see the reviews that former clients have left.
- Is the auto body shop going to work with your insurance company? If insurance companies are involved, some auto body shops make the process easy by dealing directly with the insurance company.
In the end, the important thing is to go with your gut.
