The village of Tarrytown, New York is located 25 miles north of New York City on the Hudson River. The land was originally settled by the Tappan tribe of Native Americans and later by Dutch farmers in the mind 17th century. There are two explanations for the town name: one is that Tarrytown was derived from Terve Town, or Wheat Town, after the primary crop of the village; the other, favored by author Washington Irving, is that the wives named the town so because of their husbands ability to tarry in the village tavern for so long, as he explains in his famous novel, the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Tarrytown was also nicknamed "Millionaire's Colony," and boasted many mansions such as Lyndhurst, Carrollcliff, Hillcrest and Kykuit.
