New York City and State Retirement Disability

Injured, Ill, or Disabled? No Longer Able to Perform the Duties of Your Position?

The state and city provide retirement disability benefits to public employees who are unable to perform their job duties because of an accident, illness, or other disability. Whatever the cause, if you are no longer able to work, you may qualify to receive a disability pension. Markhoff & Mittman has been winning retirement disability benefits for police officers, firefighters, teachers, office workers, and other civil service workers since 1933. Disability law is all we do—you can count on us to fight hard for you and your family.

You’ll Have an “Insider” on Your Side

At Markhoff & Mittman, your case will be handled by a former assistant of the New York City Corporate Pension Department. You’ll have the benefit of having someone on your side who has seen the system from the inside, someone who knows what can make or break your case, someone who knows exactly what the state and city retirement systems are looking for when cases are reviewed.

Getting retirement disability benefits isn’t easy. No one will take your word—and often not even that of your doctor’s. You must not only obtain substantial evidence but the right kind of medical evidence. We know the best way to effectively develop and present your medical evidence so that you win your case.

A number of programs provide civil service benefits. Depending on where you work or worked, you’ll file with one of the following:

  • New York State and Local Retirement System
  • New York Teachers’ Retirement System
  • New York Police and Firefighters’ Retirement System
  • New York City Retirement System

Each of these programs has its own complexities and requirements regarding length of service, how the injury occurred, proof, and filing deadlines. What’s more, you might also be eligible for disability benefits from the New York State workers’ compensation program or Social Security. At this difficult time, you should be taking care of yourself. Leave the worrying to us. Rest assured that we will protect your rights to all immediate and long-term benefits to which you may be entitled. Please contact Markhoff & Mittman today.
