New Rochelle, New York is a city located in Westchester County. It was settled by French Protestants, who were attracted to it as a way to escape religious persecution at the hands of the Catholics. This group was called the Huguenouts. Many of the settlers were from La Rochelle, France, which resulted in the name of the city. During the 16th century, French was the primary language in the city and French culture was flourishing. Many of New Rochelle's citizens today are French.
